What do I do if I think my disk is crashing?
If your system exhibits any of the following symptoms..
do NOT leave it powered on, turn it off now and
contact us immediately!
- The system will not boot
- Excessive or unusual drive noise (clicking, whining or vibration)
- Error messages when accessing data (see below)
These symptoms are indicative of critical disk failure, and require professional
data recovery services immediately. Even if none of these particular symptoms are present,
if you feel you may be suffering from disk failure your best bet is to
leave it powered down and bring your disk in for an assessment.
Each time you attempt to access data on the disk could be the last
chance of recovering your files, and at this point these attempts
should be made by a professional in a controlled environment.
Dangers of do-it-yourself data recovery
You may have seen hard drive diagnostic tools and "personal data recovery" software products advertised
and you might be curious about attempting to use them yourself. If you are not
a technical user, we must stress that if your disk has crashed, using these
tools in an uncontrolled environment can and most likely will damage the disk further,
and loading this software onto a failing system will almost certainly reduce the
chances of recovering your data. We
highly recommend that you have our professionals examine your disk and
determine the best course of action.
See the Assess service.
